July 7:  New Student Orientation Sessions Announced
The MPA department's new student orientation sessions will be on Thursday, August 28 from 5-6pm and Friday, August 29 from 2-3 pm in 516 of SF State's Downtown Campus, 835 Market Street.  Student only need to attend one of the sessions.  Please RSVP to the department at mpa@sfsu.edu

March 24:  Public Administration Open House
On Monday April 7, 2008 from 4:00--7:00pm the Department of Public Administration is having an Open House to celebrate our move to the Downtown Campus.  The celebration will be on our new office suite room 515 on the 5th Floor of 835 Market Street.  This event is Co-Sponsored by the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA); the   San Francisco State Department of Public Administration; and the SF State chapter of Pi Alpha Alpha.

March 5: Career Development Workshop
On Tuesday, March 18th at 5:00-6:00pm in DTC 516, Janelle Metz of the SF State Career Center will be offering "Planning for Your Career"  Workshop.  For more information, email mpa@sfsu.edu

March 4:  Information on Open Computer Labs
There will be Open Computer Lab in 617 on Thursdays from 4-6pm. This lab has 25 computers and a pay to print station. The Public Administration Office in 515 has two computers available for students to use when the office is open on M--TH from 8:30am--6:30pm. There will be a pay to print station in the PA office as well. Students who need to print documents will need to pay for the prints with their one card. The computers in 617 and 515 have microsoft applications and SPSS.

Library Services @ the Downtown Campus
PA students can check out library books on line and have them delievered to the downtown campus. The books will be available to be picked up on M, W, and TH and some T nights. February 18:  Barbara Jordan Awards for Student Excellence
Each year the Department of Public Administration honors its best students with the Barbara Jordan Awards for Student Excellence. These awards recognize outstanding achievement and service, following the example of the late esteemed public servant Barbara Jordan.
Eligible students must be graduating with the MPA degree between the Fall 2007 and Summer 2008 terms, and must be nominated by themselves, their faculty, their classmates, or anyone else familiar with their achievements. The criteria for these awards are in the document linked here. Nominees need not meet all criteria, but those meeting a greater breadth of the criteria will be given greater consideration. To nominate yourself, your student, or your classmate, complete the linked form and email it to mpa@sfsu.edu, or return it to the Department of Public Administration Program office (DTC 515), by March 7th. Recipients will be selected by the faculty and announced at the Public Administration end-of-year reception in May.

CSU Student Research Competition
The CSU Student Research Competition provides an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to present their outstanding research projects and creative works. Current students and those who graduated in spring, summer or fall 2007 are eligible to compete. The deadline for submissions is Feb. 18. The SF State campus competition will take place Feb. 25-March 7. The University will select up to 10 campus winners to compete in the CSU system-wide competition May 2-3 at CSU East Bay. Faculty members can help ensure a strong pool of applicants by actively encouraging students to apply. 'Celebrating Traditions': Art exhibition and lectures
An exhibition of Chinese paintings and calligraphy to commemorate the 60th anniversary of New Asia College in Hong Kong will be on display at the Downtown Campus Feb. 8-July 31. The collection, organized by the New Asia College Alumni Association of Northern California, includes painting and calligraphy by New Asia College alumni. Lectures on Chinese brush painting techniques and hidden meanings in Chinese art will take place in February and March. An opening reception will be held Feb. 8. January 30: Criminal: Art and Criminal Justice in America
The second professional show of the academic year comes to the Fine Arts
gallery Feb. 16-March 15. The exhibition focuses on aspects of criminal
justice, including incarceration, the death penalty and prison labor --
with works of painting, sculpture, photography, video, sound and
installation. Featured artists include Sandow Birk, Jonathan Borofsky,
Boym Partners, Alex Donis, Kota Ezawa, Julie Green, Dread Scott, Jackie
Sumell and more.  An opening reception with artist William Pope.L will be held from 1 to 3
p.m. Feb. 16 in the Fine Arts Gallery, FA 238. For details, call ext.

Prison/Culture: A Day of Art, Issues and Dialogue Featuring Keynote Speaker Angela Davis
On March 1 from 12-6pmJack Adams Hall in the Cesar Chavez Student Center, San Francisco State University Admission is free, but advance registration is required. Click here to register.
This day-long exchange of ideas will bring together artists, activists, students, and community members to examine the many ways in which art addresses and can influence social issues, in this case, the California Prison System. Internationally renowned scholar and activist, Angela Davis, will deliver the keynote speech. The symposium will feature panel discussions and workshops with dancers, musicians, visual artists, architects, theatre and literary artists including Intersection for the Arts' resident artists, The ESP Project, Campo Santo and Howard Wiley, artists from SFSU's gallery exhibition Criminal: Art and Criminal Justice in America and prominent scholars and activists in criminal justice. Collaborating partners include the SFSU Fine Arts Gallery, Criminal Justice Program, Project Rebound, The Poetry Center and Associated Students and Intersection for the Arts.

December 17:  A Smart Move
The Department of Public Administration is moving to SF State's Downtown Campus at 825 Market Street.  All faculty offices and courses will be at the downtown campus.  The MPA office will be closed as of Dec 21 through January 9th, 2008.  When the office reopens on January 10th, 2008, we will be in our new space on the 5th floor--room 515.

Presidential Management Fellowship
The application period for the Presidential Management Fellowship is finally set to open next week, with an anticipated closing date of December 4.  If you are interested in finding out about this fellowship, or if you already know you want to apply, please attend an informational meeting on Thursday November 29th at 6pm in HSS 305.
If you will attend the meeting, please let Professor Gen know at sgen@sfsu.edu.

November 15:  Join us for the final Career Development Workshop of 2007
On Wednesday, November 28 at 6--7pm in HSS 104, MPA alumni David Trovato will speak about what it is like to work for the Federal Government.  David currently works for the U.S. Department of Labor as an investigator for Labor Management Standards.

Oct 22:  Accepting Applications for the Pearl Scholarship
The MPA program is now accepting applications for Eugene I. Pearl Memorial Scholarship Fund, created by recent alumnus, Barry Pearl, in honor of his late father. The Fund provides reimbursement for the purchase of textbooks. For more information go to the Awards and Scholarships page.  Requirements: You must be specializing in Urban Administration, have 3.5 gpa and intend to pursue a career in government; preference given to full-time students but
part-time students may also apply. Deadline to apply is Thursday, October 25.
Scholarship is from $200 to $300 per semester, to be reimbursed after purchase of

September 4:  Cho Scholarship Available
Named for Professor Emeritus and previous MPA Director Yong Hyo Cho, these $750 scholarships are awarded to students admitted for the upcoming Fall semester. Criteria for selection include academic excellence, community involvement, and potential for making a difference in the public and nonprofit sectors.To apply, please send a letter to the MPA faculty addressing your qualifications in these three areas by September 14th, 2007.

November 6:  Election Returns Analysis
The SF State campus community is invited to view election returns on a big-screen television and hear real-time analysis by political science faculty and students from 7 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Nov 7, in Jack Adams Hall of the Student Center.
