The Barbara Jordan Award for Student Excellence
The Barbara Jordan Award for Student Excellence recognizes outstanding achievement and service, following the example of the late esteemed public servant Barbara Jordan, among current students of the Department of Public Administration.
- Ms. Jordan was the first African-American elected to the Texas Legislature since Reconstruction and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1972, where she became known while serving on the House Judiciary Committee during the Watergate hearings. After an outstanding career in the public service as an elected official, she later became Professor of Public Affairs at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas. As a teacher, she believed that "a democracy was only as good as the educated populace that formed it" and dedicated herself to teaching students to enhance democracy. Her career in politics, public policy, and academia was marked by her courage, ethical standards and high integrity.
