Spotlight on Public Administration Alumnus Miles Hamada, Class of 1994
| Miles Hamada received his MPA degree from SF State in1994 after already achieving a Masters in Library Science and a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work (this also from SF State).
Miles had begun his career working as a Business Manager for SRI (Stanford Research Institute) but moved in the early 1980s to the University of California-San Francisco to work in the Department of Radiation Oncology. By the time he received his MPA, he was Manager of that Department, meaning he was responsible for their budgets, facilities and assisting in planning for new labs and equipment. In 1997, he moved to New York City to become the Administrator of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the very prestigious Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He was responsible for both the main campus in Manhattan as well as four regional departments throughout New York and New Jersey. Over 450 patients were treated per day and over 150,000 patient visits occurred at different department locations. Just recently, Miles has taken on new responsibilities as the Administrative Manager of Employee Health Services for Sloan-Kettering. Today, he manages the administrative operations of the health services provided to Sloan-Kettering’s 11,000 employees. Miles was named Public Administration’s Alumnus of the Year in 2005 and serves on the Department’s Advisory Board. |

"I was a manager for many years before I participated in the SFSU Public Administration program. I learned my management skills through experience and taking an active interest in management theory. I always felt that I needed to study management in an academic setting to discipline my thinking and solidify my knowledge base. The Public Administration program met both of these needs and I also met many interesting students and faculty". |
