HISTORY OF CALIFORNIA

TEXTS:

  • Rice, Bullough, and Orsi The Elusive Eden: A New History of California (Third Edition)
  • Lisa McGirr, Suburban Warriors
  • Carey McWilliams, Southern California: An Island on the Land
  • Douglas Monroy, Thrown Among Strangers
(These texts are available at the school bookstore and on reserve at the library.)
COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING:
The final grade will be determined by the results of three take home book reports (75%), bi-weekly quizzes (15%) and class participation (10%). There will be separate handouts on Writing Papers, Late Paper Policies, and Quiz Preparations. All examinations are to be word processed and double-spaced. The book reports will be due on March 1, April 18, and May 22.

Class discussions are an important part of the course. All students are expected to have finished the reading assignments before each class session and should be prepared to answer questions and discuss the material at all sessions. To guarantee this, there will be a brief quiz every other week covering the readings for that session and the preceding session.  Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class and after the break. Attendance will be graded as follows: 3 or fewer total absences (A);  4-6 absences (B); 7-10 absences (C); 11-14 absences (D); more than 14 absences (F). There are no excused absences.

For Your Information: The faculty union is in the midst of contract negotiations and there is the possibility of a work interruption. Updates on this situation will be provided throughout the course.
