Range

The range is the simplest measure of dispersion.  It is the highest case value minus the lowest case value.  If we had a sample of adults the oldest of whom was 70 and the youngest of whom was 49, the range would be 21.  The range is generally not used because it is so susceptible to the influence of outliers.
