Percentages

Percentages are the most basic way of describing dispersion.  With nominal or ordinal data with few values, you can pretty much describe what percentage of cases are in each category.  With measurement data, researchers often use cumulative percentages to describe major groupings of cases.  However, the standard deviation and interquartile range are much more powerful ways of describing the distribution of measurement data.
