PROFESSIONAL AND CIVIC ACTIVITIES
A. Professional Activities
Curricular Development/Innovations in Teaching
2005-present Teaching Presentations on Sustainable Development and Urban
Futures
For the past year, I have been developing slide shows for two of the
classes I teach on “Sustainable Urban Development” and “Alternative
Urban
Futures.” The slide shows are designed to provide students with both
visual and text based information on the course themes and issues. The
slide show for the Sustainable Urban Development course takes a
problems-solutions approach focused on water, waste, energy,
transportation, and food systems. The Alternative Urban Futures slide
show is organized historically (beginning with the earliest cities,
moving into the pre-industrial, and then the contemporary period). It is
designed to systematically illustrate the history and development of
urban infrastructure systems in cities around the world.
2004-present THE ADOBE PROJECT: An Interactive Web Site on Green and
Healthy Home
Developed the concept for and then designed, built, and created the
content for an interactive website on green, healthy home. This project
is being developed through a unique partnership that I created with
colleagues at the Art Institute of San Francisco and Adobe Software
Company to design an interactive 3D website that provides detailed
information on how urban residents can decrease toxins, and increase
health and environmental quality, by incorporating ecologically
responsible practices and appropriate technologies in their home. In
addition to its content, the website has become a place where new
software technologies and uses have been developed.
1998-present Building a Graduate Program in City & Regional Planning (MCRP)
at SFSU
Working with colleagues in Urban Studies and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s
Urban Planning Program to offer a Masters in City and Regional Planning
program at SFSU.
1999 Study Abroad Course on Sustainable Urban Development Planning &
Practice
I designed this course to compliment the course I teach on Sustainable
Development in Cities course. The course takes students to Havana, Cuba
to see practical, successful examples of the theories, models, policies,
processes, and appropriate technologies we study in the classroom.
1998-1999 Case Studies of Sustainable Development Practices and Programs
in Cities around the World
I spent two years collecting case studies of sustainable development
projects in cities throughout the world. I collected case studies from
over 36 countries and 70 cities. In order to maximize the value of the
case study materials pedagogically, I divided them into 11 thematic
subject areas and then developed a specific question that each case
study is particularly well suited to address. I have shared the case
study material with faculty teaching courses related to urban planning
and policies in many countries.
1997 Development of the Urban Environment and Sustainability and Social
Justice Concentrations within the Environmental Studies Major and
Program
In addition to working with SFSU colleagues to develop the Environmental
Studies major, I developed the concentration on the Urban Environment
and was part of the committee that developed the concentration on
Sustainability and Social Justice.
