MASTER OF ARTS IN SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY

Dr. Marina Abalakina, Graduate Coordinator – (415) 405-3477 mabalaki@sfsu.edu

The Social Psychology graduate program is designed to equip students to work as change agents in applied settings (such as community agencies, schools and business organizations) and to provide appropriate preparation and experience to students who intend to seek a doctorate degree.

The program emphasizes familiarity with the literature and methods of social psychology, leadership and supervision skills, advanced written and oral communication, and professional experience in both research and applications.  Program requirements include 33 semester units of coursework culminating with a thesis.  Classes and non-class activities are coordinated to promote integration of learning through academic study, original research, and supervised experience in field and laboratory settings.  Completion of the degree typically takes two years, with individual study plans designed to accommodate employment and other individual commitments.

Prerequisites:  The applicant should have as strong background in psychology, including social psychology, research methods and statistics, although minor deficiencies can be corrected by further work after acceptance to the Program.  The aptitude test of the Graduate Record Examination is required.  Work experience is desirable, and people in mid-career are encouraged to apply.
