Winter Session Has Been Cancelled

As of Monday, November 9, 2009 the winter session for all psychology classes has been cancelled.

Acceptance Into the Psychology Major is Now Closed

The Psychology Department is an impacted major. The students that were able to turn in their change of major applications that did not have a degree completion plan during the month of October have been submitted into the selection pool for Fall 2010. Decisions made by the department will be relayed to students in March 2010. Students will still have the option to submit to the pool until the end of November. After November 30th no change of major forms will be accepted.

Impaction of Psychology Major

As of July 2009 the Psychology major was approved for impaction by the Chancellor's office. The Department is currently reviewing new criteria for becoming a Psychology Major. We will be posting more specific information about prerequisites to the Psychology Major early in the fall semester.

Temporary Suspension of the Psychology Minor

The minor is being reviewed for temporary suspension. During this process, we are not accepting any new psychology minors. Students who have already declared the minor may continue their planned course of study.

Suspension of Spring Admissions

The CSU has suspended all spring admissions until further notice. Therefore, the only admission date into our graduate programs is for the fall 2010 semester.

Implementation of our "new" major; Continuation of our "old" major

For students planning to graduate in Fall 2009 or Spring 2010:

Due to budget cuts and canceled courses, the graduation requirements for the BA in Psychology degree have been modified. These requirements are meant to facilitate timely graduation without minimizing the value of the broad area of study in psychology.

  1. Take 12 units of courses within the list of courses designated as "Basic"
  2. Take 18 units of any combination of courses designated as "Basic" or "Bredth"

Students are strongly encouraged to seek advising in order to create a degree program that covers the widest range of courses, given the constraints of our course offerings. To ensure timely filing of graduation applications, students are further reminded to see faculty advisers early in the semester.

Responses to Frequently Asked Questions
for Psychology Students – Fall 2009

What classes are being offered next semester?

The revised schedule of psychology courses for fall has been posted..

I’m a graduating senior and I need certain classes! What can I do?

You should meet with a Psychology advisor to discuss your schedule and your course options. Although there may be a shortage of seats, there are a variety of courses being offered in each of the three required areas (Area I, Area II, and Practicum courses). You may also wish to consider classes in the Winter and Spring semester, both of which should have fairly robust offerings.

What about statistics and methods? (PSY 371 and PSY 400)

No seats have been cut from these two courses. Sections will also be available in the Winter and Summer schedule.

The schedule says that PSY 400 is only 3 units instead of 4 units now. Will I have enough units to graduate if I only took the minimum number of psychology course requirements?

If you have met all other psychology requirements and are simply at 39 units instead of 40 because of the change in PSY 400, an advisor will approve your completion of the major requirements. However, you will still be required to complete 120 units total at the University in order to be eligible to graduate.

Will you substitute other classes for graduation if a class I need isn’t being offered?

You should meet with a Psychology advisor to discuss alternatives and course options – don’t assume that substitutions will be approved without speaking to an advisor before you take the class.

Will graduating seniors be given priority to add the classes that they really, really need?

If there’s a class that you need to graduate, you should make every effort to register for it during early registration. If you are not able to get a spot during registration, we would suggest being in contact with the Professor of the course before the semester begins to let them know that you will be trying to add on the first day.

New Advising Tutorial

It is imperative that students receive advising to make sure they are on track with their academic goals. 5 key points in a student's academic career when they should seek advising:

  1. When the student enters the university, either as a first-year or transfer student.
  2. When the student enters the major, minor or program.
  3. If and when the student experiences academic difficulty, including probation and possibly disqualification.
  4. When the student moves into upper division standing and closer to graduation.
  5. As the student prepares to graduate and move beyond his or her studies at San Francisco State University.

A great new resource for advising has been created for students to access before seeking out a department advisor. The short tutorial provides a wealth of information about the major and addresses many frequently asked student questions.
