ADVICE

San Francisco State University

Is law school for me? This is a question that students should consider very seriously. Law School represents a huge investment of time, money, and effort.

We recommend students evaluate a diverse range of resources and make an informed decision based on all of their research. Students should not make a decision based on one source of advice.

We encourage students to proactively research information from different universities, talk to faculty at SFSU, persons in the legal profession, your family and peers to make an informed decision. We have collected prelaw links from different Universities to help you get started.

Is Law School Right for You?

Excerpt:
"The siren song of law school
No one denies that the notion of going to law school is sexy, even after L.A. Law's cancellation. It's a move that suggests direction, smarts, and at least on one level, a commitment to high-minded ideals such as justice and public service. Just look at law school admissions brochures - you've never seen so many happy faces, so many fascinating-sounding programs, study abroad opportunities, and fabulously successful alums.

Back to School?

Excerpt:
"Proof abounds that the more education a person has, the higher her salary is likely to be. With this information in hand, why not head back to school at a time when jobs are few, salaries are dropping, and it's not looking like things will improve drastically in the immediate future? There are pros and cons to this decision, as there are with pretty much any decision, so it's worth taking some time to decide what makes the most sense for you and your goals."

Advice for Women on Choosing a Law School

Excerpt:
" If you're applying to law school, whether you're a man or a woman (but especially if you're a woman), there are some simple things that you should do before you decide where to go to learn the law. The first is to read both "Becoming Gentlemen: Women's Experiences at One Ivy League Law School," (University of Pennsylvania Law Review, November 1994) by Lani Guinier and "The Legal Education of Twenty Women," (Stanford Law Review, May 1988), by Catherine Weiss and Louise Melling."

Where my girls at?

Excerpt:
" Women are finally catching up to men in law school enrollment
In a field that has long been dominated by males, women are on their way to becoming the majority of first year law students. According to the American Bar Association, 43,518 students entered law school in the fall of 2000. Of these students, 21,499, or 49%, were women. Not only are these numbers going to affect law schools around the country, but the rise in female lawyers is also expected to help change the low percentages of female judges and partners in top law firms."

Advice to Incoming Minority Students

Excerpt:
" As recent Supreme Court decisions and public policy initiatives indicate a shift to a more gender-neutral, colorblind educational system, minority law students are left to use all available resources to ensure a diverse experience. The decision to attend a certain law school is fraught with various concerns, most of which are common to all prospective students. However, for minority students, the decision to attend a particular law school is sufficiently different for both academic and professional reasons, that a separate discussion is beneficial. "
