Most Political Science graduate students have a BA in Political Science. While this is recommended, we accept applications from any majors.
In general, minimum cumulative GPA is 3.25. Applicants with lower GPAs may be considered if they have taken the GRE and received high scores.
Students applying for graduate admission will send materials to two separate locations. Materials could be sent in any order before the deadline.
First, a general graduate application must be made online to the San Francisco State University Graduate Studies. The form is available at http://www.csumentor.edu/AdmissionApp/grad_apply.asp. All applications are online only, paper applications have been discontinued. As part of this application, applicants will be asked to send copies of official transcripts to the Graduate Studies. (This form and the transcripts will be forwarded by the Graduate Studies to the Political Science Department upon receipt and should not be sent separately by the applicant to the department.) Visit the Graduate Studies web site for general information.
Second, applicants should submit the following materials directly to the Political Science Department:
2 letters of recommendation. Letters of reference should be sent directly to Political Science Department office in sealed envelopes. Letters of recommendation should come from professionals who can attest to the applicant's promise as a graduate student.
Personal statement (1-2 pages), if it was not included in the online application.
If applicants meet the GPA requirement, you do not need to take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). If you do not meet the minimum GPA, your application may still be considered, but applicants are strongly advised to take the GRE with the understanding that high test scores may strengthen an application.
Financial aid information can be found on the university prospective student web page, as well as the Office of Student Financial Aid web site. The department does not currently offer any scholarhip or grant to incoming graduate students. Some paid graduate assistant positions are available to continuing students.
Department Deadline: Admission to Fall Semester - March 31 (effective Fall 2008); Admission to Spring Semester - November 1 (effective Spring 2008). Applications may be turned in prior to these deadlines. Early applications are encouraged but notification of admission status may not occur until the deadline.
