Francis Neely is Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science.  He specializes in American politics, political psychology, and methodology.  He teaches courses that examine political attitudes and behavior, parties and partisanship, election systems and representation, and research design and methodology.   His current research examines political partisanship in the U.S. , focusing on how people understand themselves in relation to parties, and to what degree that relationship contributes to one's political identity.

In addition, he has led a two-year study of ranked-choice voting in San Francisco , in collaboration with Professor Corey Cook and the Public Research Institute. In this study, they assess the impact of the reform from a majority runoff system to an alternative voting system with attention to groups of voters who may be at risk.

He has contributed entries to the Encyclopedia of American Parties and Election (Facts on File), was the lead author of two reports to the City and County of San Francisco on ranked-choice voting, has articles under review on partisanship and alternative voting, and co-authored an article on attitudes about the women's movement in Public Opinion Quarterly .
