Homework 6

Spring 2001

Due:April 23

Relationships between Nominal Level Variables

From M&B: 14.11, 14.12, 15.3, 15.8*, 16.6, 16.9 [Note: problems in Chapter 16 are optional]

 * For problem 15.8, please also compute chi square, lambda and Cramers’s V. (Cramers V is optional)

Please show all of your work, and interpret your results!

Using SPSS:  (Please turn in your output.)

Open cit2000.sav

Formulate a hypothesis that can be tested with the data in this dataset.  State the hypothesis and null hypothesis (this requires identifying appropriate dependent and independent variables).

Recode, if necessary, your dependent variable so that there are only 3 categories (e.g., good, fair and poor).  IRun a crosstab, requesting the appropriate percentages, test of statistical significance and measures of association

(1)   Do the percentages suggest that your hypothesis is supported?   Please explain.

(2)   Does the test of statistical significance suggest your hypothesis is supported? Please explain?

(3)   What do the measures of association tell you about the relationship between the two variables?

 Optional:

Develop a hypothesis about how a third variable might affect the relationship between the independent variable and dependent variable you chose in #1 (see table 16.11 in M&B.).  State that hypothesis, and null hypothesis:

(4)   . Run a crosstab to test this hypothesis. Your third variable will go in the box below “layer 1 of 1.”  Was your hypothesis supported?  What are the implications for further analysis?
