Evaluating Qualitative Research

Please refer to the article, "Leadership in the Public Sector," by P.W. Ingraham and H. Getha-Taylor (Review of Public Personnel Administration June 2004) and answer the following questions:

  1. Do the authors make a clear statement as to the purpose of their study?  If so, what is it?

  2. Do the authors define their own roles with respect to the research subject?

  3.  Do the authors define the parameters or  boundaries of their study? If so, what are they?

  4. Do the authors describe their data collection procedure(s)? What is it (or are they)?  What are the benefits and drawbacks of the method(s) they chose?

  5. Do the authors describe their procedures for analyzing the data they collect?

  6. What means did the authors use for summarizing their findings (e.g., did they develop some kind of typology?)  Was their effort effective?

  7. How would you evaluate the overall research design and analysis?

  8. If you were concerned about the topic of what makes effective leadership training, would you find this article useful? Why or why not? If not, what would have made it more useful?
