Graduate Training in
Mental Health Research

A New Pilot Program Specialization within the Research Psychology Graduate Program at San Francisco State University

Please note: The Mental Health Research specialization is currently undergoing some changes.  Therefore we will not be accepting new students into the program for the Fall of 2003.

The Psychology Department offers graduate training in mental health research, in a new program that combines classroom learning, intensive research experience, and a clinical practicum in a community agency. The two year program leads to a Master's of Arts (MA) degree in Psychological Research. The Mental Health Research Track (MHRT) is a specialized training track within the Psychology Department's Research Psychology program. Students in the MHRT work closely with a faculty research mentor, and develop a thesis project based on ongoing research in their mentor's lab.

A primary aim of the MHRT is to provide intensive research training to students who (1) plan on pursuing the PhD in Clinical Psychology, and (2) are from groups historically under-represented within pre-doctoral Clinical Psychology training programs. This includes minority students, students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and older students who have returned to pursue their educational goals after taking time away from school.

Deadline for Applying

1. Finding a Faculty Research Mentor
Applicants to the Mental Health Research Track must first contact a prospective research mentor, and secure an agreement from that faculty member to serve as the applicant's research mentor if the applicant is accepted to the program.

2. Applying to the Psychology Department and the University.
Applicants to the MHRT must submit separate applications to the Psychology Department and the University. Both applications can be accessed online by following the links below. Because the MHRT is a training emphasis within the Research Psychology Programs, applicants should apply to the Research Program and indicate on a separate sheet and on the application envelope their interest in the MHRT. In the application essay, applicants should also discuss why they are applying to the MHRT, how it fits with their career goals, the nature of any clinical experience they have had, and why they wish to work with a particular research mentor.

3. Graduate Record Exam (GRE).
We require all applicants to take both the general GRE and the Psychology GRE.

All application materials from applicants interested in beginning the program in the fall of 2002 must be received by the Psychology Department by April 1, 2002.
