Lab Members

Jae H. Paik, Ph. D.
Dr. Paik received her Ph.D. in developmental psychology and cognitive science
from Indiana University in 2005. Her research focuses on the development of early
mathematical concepts, comparison processes, and verb acquisitions. She is
particularly interested in the intricate relation between language, culture, and
conceptual development. She is currently conducting various studies examining
the cross-cultural differences between English, French, Korean, and Chinese
speaking children's cognitive development.

Al Motter
Al is working on his Master's Degree in Developmental Psychology. He is from
Southern California but currently resides in Marin County where he doesn't have
a car.

Michael Hayes
Mikey is currently a second-year graduate student in the SFSU Developmental Psych
program. He is interested in the critical learning period and development of multilingual
abilities. Mikey can read and write in six languages and is working on learning a
seventh language. Working out and doing gymnastics are two of Mikey's passions.

Simin Niksiar
Simin is a senior at SFSU in the psychology program and is planning on continuing
to graduate school in the developmental or cognitive psychology programs. Her
research interests are language development, cross-cultural differences in verb
acquisitions, and early mathematical concepts. When not studying, she enjoys
cooking, exercising, playing volleyball, and yoga.

Manuel Gonzales
Manny is a second-year Developmental Psychology graduate student. He is
originally from Peru and currently resides in South San Francisco. Manny is
fluent in Spanish and is interested in the influence of sociocultural factors on
the cognitive development of Latino children. When not in school, Manny
loves cooking, watching LOST (and other TV shows), and snacking on
chocolate covered raisins.

Hoan Luong
Hoan is currently a graduate student in the Developmental Psychology Program.
His interests are in the ecological and physiological approach to visual perception
in objects/pictures and layouts, the motor actions that are associated with visual
objects and pictures, self-regulation/ironic processing, and eye movements in
reading/visual perception that assist in language acquisition. He plans to apply to
a Ph.D. program after receiving his M.A. at SFSU. His hobbies include singing/voice
training, tennis, hockey, UFO's, and he thinks reading research articles are fun...=_="

Racheal Chandra
Racheal is a second-year graduate student in Developmental Psychology. She has
experience working with children with autism, teaching assistantships, and research.
Currently, she is working on her thesis examining the relationship between romantic
involvement and ethnic identity on academic achievement. She enjoys good food,
good conversations, and good company!

Madison Lee
Madison comes to our lab from the MATESOL program and hopes to learn about
the link between psychology and pedagogy. In addition, Madison is interested
in discovering how children's thinking and behavior affect pedagogy. She is
pleased to be working with Dr. Paik and the other passionate researchers in the lab.
Madison has an 11-year-old daughter who has helped her to understand children’s
psychology and language learning. Though, she hopes her daughter can master
Korean even after the critical period!

Hollie Adams
Hollie is in her second year of the Developmental Psychology Master's Program at
SFSU. She is originally from the East Bay and currently resides in Walnut Creek.
Hollie's thesis focuses on the relationship between parental support and academic
achievement in multiethnic college students. She hopes to meet the IRB submission
deadline this semester so that she can begin data collection in the Spring of next
year. Hollie also works part-time at Children's Hospital and Research Center in
Oakland and is a substitute teacher for the San Ramon Valley Unified School District.
Upon completion of the program, Hollie's ultimate goal is to begin teaching. When
she is free from school and work, Hollie enjoys cooking, baking, drawing, painting,
interior design, and all sorts of crafts.

Kammy Kwok
Kammy is a first-year Developmental Psychology graduate student. She received
her BA in Psychology from SFSU in 2007 and has worked as a preschool teacher
and as an aide for special needs children. Her research interests include the
effects of culture on social and emotional development. Kammy loves to eat, so
please feed her.

Grace Tung
Grace is originally from Taiwan and has been in California for the past 7 years. She
graduated from SFSU in 2008 with a Bachelor of Art in Psychology and a minor in
Business. She is planning to apply to graduate school and hopes to major in
Industrial/Organizational Psychology. She speaks Mandarin and English.

Carlos Luna
Carlos is a senior at SFSU in the Psychology program and plans to head to grad
school at some point. His interests include human mind and behavior in the context
of human-technology interaction (Human behavior online and in virtual worlds) and
basic research. When taking a break from studying, he enjoys running, biking,
wandering aimlessly and playing video games. TF2 anyone?
