Clean and Dry
Reminder to bring back equipment clean and dry. Some common problems and recommendations:
- Waders. Often come back damp; this must stop! Recommendation: Before bringing them in, clean the mud off and wash them out if they are wet inside. Use soap and rinse. Then hang them out inverted to drip for a while, and finally sit them up in a warm sunny spot and peel down the legs so the inside dries out. If this isn't possible, use a towel to dry the inside out. Note: if we are not diligent about this, we not only get the map librarian frustrated, we also risk introducing invasive non-native species like zebra mussels into other creeks.
- Stadia rod. If used in the creek, first rinse thoroughly before you leave the creek so you don't have any sand or other grit inside. The Sprinter stadia rods will completely come apart, making it easy to clean them. When you get to a hose, wash off the stinky creek water with fresh, and let it all dry.
- Survey tape. If it's been in the creek or in poison oak, you need to clean the tape. With poison oak, use dish detergent to remove the oil, and rinse thoroughly. You might want to use tecnu on yourself afterwards. With creek water, rinse with fresh and let it dry.
