History 111:  Midterm Study Questions

 

You will be required to bring a blue examination book for your midterm

 

Part I:  Worth 70% of grade.

 

You will write an essay on one of the following questions:

 

  1. Why did the French Revolution occur?  Was it a "social" revolution, pitting class against class, or was it an "ideological" revolution, in which ideas played a dominant role?  Consider the origins, course and outcome of the French Revolution from a number of perspectives, and write a clear essay with a strong argument, using support from lecture and the readings.

 

  1. What caused the Reformation?   Describe the social, economic, religious, and political context of the Reformation, and make a strong argument for the relative importance of the various factors that led to the Protestant Reformation.

 

  1. What were the causes and consequences of the Thirty Years’ War?  Was it a war of religion, or something else?

 

Part II :  Worth 30% of grade.

 

You will briefly identify and explain the significance of three of the following terms:
