Why did the First World War occur?  What were the most important factors that led to the outbreak of war in August 1914?  What were the social and political effects of the First World War?

Using your reading of the textbook, All Quiet on the Western Front, and your knowledge of the lectures, compose a clear, organized essay on the origins and effects of the war on European society.

 Do not collect your paper from the internet; this constitutes plagiarism, and will be given a grade of "F."

Typed, double-spaced, one-inch margins, 12-point maximum font size, paginated with your name on each page, 4-5 pages long.  Due in class May 2nd.

Be sure to be specific when citing examples, whether from the textbook, the novel, or lectures.  This should be done by footnotes, endnotes, or parenthetic citations showing the author's name, and the page number.
