PROSPECTIVE GRADUATE STUDENTS

* Announcement

The application cycle for fall 2009 is now closed. Please visit us again in early spring 2010 for the latest application information. Note: We only accept applications in the spring for the following fall semester. We do not retain old application files so you will have to submit entirely new materials if you re-apply to the program during the next application cycle.

*Message from Graduate Coordinator

Greetings! Thank you for your interest in the Department of International Relations Master’s Program.

We seek to increase our students’ knowledge of international relations, to endow them with the tools to understand the world around them and to develop options for responding to various policy challenges, and to give them skills that they can use to excel in further academic study or a profession. As well, we aim to contribute to our university’s broader goals of internationalizing the curriculum, serving the community, and supporting equity and social justice.

Further information about our program can be obtained through the Department website and University Bulletin.

To ensure full consideration for admission in the fall semester, you must submit materials by March 1, 2010. We may, but do not guarantee we will, examine files received after that date.

Please note that you must meet both University and Departmental requirements to be accepted into the MA program. Procedures for applying to the University and our Department are available through the web links below.

*Admission Criteria-Department of International Relations

To receive serious consideration, applicants will have a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) with relevant course work and a grade point average of at least 3.25 (out of 4.0) in the last 60 units of undergraduate study. Ideally, applicants also will have several upper division courses in international relations. Applicants are looked on favorably if they have skills in statistics, computer applications, media production, foreign languages, or international experience.

Successful applicants should score above median in verbal and analytical sections of the GRE and at least median in the quantitative section. Where relevant, they should meet minimum TOEFL scores requirements.

The graduate coordinator may require successful applicants to supplement their background in international relations with coursework, readings, and/or essays prior to or during their first year in the program. In such instances, applicants will be admitted to the program with conditionally classified standing.
