Spring 2009 Awards & Scholarships

 

Awards presented at the 2009 History Department Honors Banquet
Saturday, May 9, 2009 at the Seven Hills Conference Center

The Paul Lorence Memorial Scholarship
2009 award: Rachael Hill

This scholarship of $2000 is awarded to a graduating senior from among the top GPA earners who plan to continue their education.  The scholarship is intended to recognize the scholastic achievement of a history major.  Faculty members nominate graduating seniors for this scholarship, and a department committee makes the final award.

The Undergraduate Honoree
2009 award:
Lora Rasmussen

Special recognition as the Departmental Honoree at the Undergraduate Honors Convocation is an opportunity for the History Department to recognize students for achievements other than - or in addition to - high GPA. The College of BSS supplies the History Department with a list of 6 undergraduates with the highest GPAs, and then the Department chair --upon recommendations submitted by the History faculty-- chooses the student.

2009 award: Melissa Barthelemy

The Gary and Cynthia Bengier University Scholarship
2009 awards:

Two scholarships of $1,000 each shall be awarded to history majors. To qualify, students must be sophomores, juniors, or seniors in fall of the current academic year. In addition, students must demonstrate financial need.

 
     
 

The Robert Pasker-Laurie Pitman Fellowship
2009 award: Lora Rasmussen

For Entering Graduate Students, this fellowship for $3000 is intended to encourage promising graduate students to enter our graduate program, and to aid these promising so that they can attend San Francisco State University.  The departmental Graduate Committee awards this fellowship to the applicant with the strongest academic record and best writing sample. 

The Jacques Hymans Graduate Fellowship
2009 award: John Elrick

This fellowship of $4000 is to reward students who are both academically successful and contributors to the department; the fellowship is also meant to assist students financially so that they can continue in the program.  Faculty members nominate students for the fellowship and the Graduate Committee makes the final selection.

The History Department Graduate Fellowship
2009 awards: Caitlin Fisher, Peter Johnsson

The Department awards two ellowships of $3000 each to continuing graduate students.  Like the other fellowships, these are to recognize academically successful graduate students and to assist them financially.  Students are nominated by faculty members and the final two are chosen by the Graduate Committee of the Department.

The Paul O'Meara Memorial Scholarship
2009 award:
Jeremy Garsha

The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize the academic achievements of a graduate student whose major field is Europe before or after 1500.  The amount of the fellowship is $500.  Students are nominated by faculty members and the finalist chosen by the Graduate Committee of the Department.
