This scholarship is intended to help students pursue their interests and education in archaeology in any region of the world. The amount of the award ranges from $500 to $1000. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 and write a short essay. The History, Anthropology, and Classics Departments administer the essay entries in late April of each year.
The California Pre-Doctoral Program is designed to increase the pool of potential faculty by supporting the doctoral aspirations of CSU students who have experienced economic and educational disadvantages. Announcements and application forms are circulated early each spring. Students are selected by a committee of faculty from the California State University and the University of California. This is a one-time award. Current or former pre-doctoral scholars are not eligible to reapply.
The San Francisco State University Scholarship is available to continuing SFSU students on a competitive basis in recognition of academic excellence, community involvement, and financial need. Students must demonstrate financial need as determined by the SFSU Office of Student Financial Aid (apply using the 2007-2008 FAFSA application), be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or graduate GPA of 3.5. This Department fellowship for $3000 is intended to encourage promising graduate students to enter our graduate program, and to aid these promising so that they can attend San Francisco State University. The departmental Graduate Committee awards this fellowship to the applicant with the strongest academic record and best writing sample. Applicants to the M.A. program are encouraged to submit the best writing sample that they have. This Department fellowship of $4000 is to reward students who are both academically successful and contributors to the department; the fellowship is also meant to assist students financially so that they can continue in the program. Faculty members nominate students for the fellowship and the Graduate Committee makes the final selection. The Department awards two fellowships of $3000 each to continuing graduate students. Like the other fellowships, these are to recognize academically successful graduate students and to assist them financially. Students are nominated by faculty members and the final two are chosen by the Graduate Committee of the Department. The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize the academic achievements of a graduate student whose major field is Europe before or after 1500. The amount of the fellowship varies up to $500. Students are nominated by faculty members and the finalist chosen by the Graduate Committee of the Department.
Two Graduate Fellowships of $3,000 ($1,500 per semester) will be awarded to Master's Students in any field based on the following: academic achievement, professional promise, relevant non-academic activity, financial, personal statement, and two references.
The purpose of San Francisco State University's Graduate Equity Fellowship program is to increase diversity by encouraging students with educationally or economically disadvantaged backgrounds and outstanding academic records to pursue and complete master's and doctoral degrees. The fellowship is only available to students admitted to a SFSU master's or doctoral degree program. Credential-only and certificate students are not eligible.
The San Francisco State University Graduate Student Award for Distinguished Achievement is conferred on students who have earned a distinguished record of academic performance and contribution in the major field. Nomination for the award is based on criteria that are specified by the faculty in the respective graduate major subject areas. Academic achievement, contribution to the profession or discipline, to the department, college or university, or to the community are examples of student achievement that may be taken into consideration. In the History Department, the Graduate Committee chooses nominees for the award from faculty recommendations based on the top 6 GPA earners to the committee, and then 1 or 2 nominees are sent to the College of BSS and are ultimately determined by the College Graduate Advising Committee (i.e. all of the graduate coordinators). The Purpose of the Herodotus Fund for Graduate Travel in History is to assist promising graduate students majoring in History at San Francisco State University to travel both domestically and internationally for presenting papers and doing research.
For students interested in Public Policy, Economics, Government or American History. Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA and be pursuing research using either the Glenn S. Dumke Collection or other CSU Archival Collections. For 2007-2008, one fellowship of $1000 will be awarded. The department has need of qualified graduate students as assistants for lower-division survey classes. Their major duty is to grade exams or papers, with the total time of 35 hours per course per semester. The rate of pay is modest - about $10/hr- but if you are planning to teach or apply for Doctoral study, this can be valuable experience to list on your application.
