  Focus on the Human Environment
Geography majors who are interested in a career in teaching geography as a social science or who want a liberal arts orientation in geography should find this an attractive focus. Employment opportunities for teachers of geography will grow as the goal for geographic literacy is implemented. It is recommended that foreign language, English composition and computer skills accompany this orientation.
Focus:
Any combination of 400- and 500-level classes can make up the focus, though the following are especially recommended.
  • Geog 422: Environmental Perception
  • Geog 445: Political Geography
  • Geog 454: San Francisco on Foot
  • Geog 455: Geography of Ethnic Communities

In addition, Geographic Internships (GEOG 688) are available which can lead to a career opportunity. This can be taken for 2-6 units after a major has completed 15 units of geography. Courses in English composition and computer literacy are strongly recommended. Foreign language skills are also advised.

Courses in other departments on individual advisement:

Fields which complement the study of cultural variables include history and anthropology.

Employment:
In addition to government service employment, liberal arts graduates have better track records to high management business levels than do narrow specialists. This focus is appropriate to a career in teaching or working in industries such as publishing which utilize writing and editing skills. Public relations and research positions also are employment options for this focus.
