Subfield: Remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), quantitative methods
Focus: Integration of current geographic techniques with data mining for environmental management applications
Geographic Area: California Bay-Delta, Polar regions
"I'm primarily a Remote Sensing specialist interested in applying Earth imaging technologies to real-world problems. I integrate Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with Data Mining to improve the application of these techniques to environmental management problems. Currently, I am developing automated systems for detecting wetland invasive vegetation and creating new algorithms for quantitatively analyzing and comparing complex spatio-temporal data sets."

Subfield: Transportation, Land Use, Urban Geography
Focus: Politics of urban transportation and land use, conflicts over urban space
Geographic Area: U.S. South, San Francisco Bay Area
"My research concerns the politics of mobility in cities. I am interested in both how people move around cities and how urban space is configured for movement. I am interested in how the various stakeholders and factions in urban growth debates position themselves and how they conceptualize mobility. My dissertation focused on transportation and land use debates in Atlanta, Georgia -- the poster child of sprawl. I am also interested in a comparative framework between Atlanta and the Bay Area."

Subfield: Wildlife Conservation, marine resources, geographic information systems (GIS)
Focus: Marine mammal and endangered species conservation, public participatory geographic information systems (GIS), community-based coastal and marine conservation
Geographic Area: Southeast Asia (Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam), Belize, San Francisco Bay, California
"My Research addresses population and community ecology of threatened and endangered species as they relate and potentially can contribute to local conservation efforts and regional scale coastal and marine management schemes. My emphasis is on the evolution of consistent standards of field methodology and monitoring techniques, and on the creation of educational materials that can be applied to community-based conservation planning for coastal and marine areas. The use of flagship species can symbolize coastal and marine conservation in locally associated areas. Conservation planning based on these animals can be designed for the on-going management and monitoring of coastal areas based on community ecology, oceanographic parameters, and local conservation issues. My dissertation was a study of the assessment, mapping, and management techniques used in an area which has a marine mammal population potentially threatened by coastal development and increasing fishing and tourist activities: the dugong on the Andaman coast of Thailand."

Subfield: Urban Biogeography, Natural Resource Management, Disturbance recovery
Focus: Biogeography, resource management, environmental and land use history, environmental studies, vegetation change. Plant and animal interactions in Wild land Urban interface, plant recovery from fire disturbance, endangered plant communities, Natural Resource Management, Fragmentation due to urban development
Geographic Area: San Francisco, California, US and Pacific available
"My research addresses issues of disturbance and human and floral and faunal interactions. My emphasis is understanding how plant species and communities react to natural and human caused disturbances such as fire, mining, or urban development.    I am currently involved in projects for the California Department of Fish and Game looking at Ione Manzanita populations and distribution, with the national Park Service documenting the effects of the 1995 Mt Vision Fire on the Bishop Pine community and working with the city of San Francisco on their Significant Natural Areas Management Plan.  I am also interested in environmental and geographic education.  Check out my web page at http://bss.sfsu.edu/holzman/ for further information."

Subfield: Micrometeorology, biometeorology, boundary layer meteorology, applied climatology
Focus: Surface-atmosphere interaction, carbon cycling, surface energy exchanges
Geographic Area: Not available
"My research interests focus on interaction between Earth's surface and its atmosphere. This includes exchanges of radiation, convective energy, and carbon dioxide as well as mixing process in the lower atmosphere. This field of interest lies at the cross-roads of a number of interdisciplinary topics within the Earth sciences, providing for interesting collaboration with hydrologists, ecologists, glaciologists and air pollution modelers. My methodological approach is through field observations using a variety of electronic instrumentation, as well as spatial modeling. Examples of my recent research include: Application of micrometeorological techniques to investigate forest-atmosphere exchange of carbon and energy; Spatial variability of surface energy exchanges and complex wind fields and associated pollutant dispersion patterns in mountainous terrain; Sublimation rates through ice-cored moraines in Antarctic, and; Driving mechanisms and physical structure of tropical sea breezes and their interaction with thunderstorm activity. Check out my web page at http://bss.sfsu.edu/andrewo/research/ for further information."

Subfield: Historical geography, Water resources, Environmental perception
Focus: Environmental history, California water resources
Geographic Area: California
"I explore the range and variety of stakeholder perspectives on California environmental issues, especially relating to water projects, watershed restoration, and agricultural preservation. I am also especially interested in women's influences on California's environmental history."

Subfield:geographic information systems (GIS), fisheries oceanography, history of science
Focus:Multidimensional GIS, scientific visualization, oceanographic models, history of recent North American oceanography and marine science, application of GIS to historiography.
Geographic Area: Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea, Arctic
"My research addresses the application of multidimensional GIS to both scientific and historical research. My emphasis is on the use and diffusion of techniques for representing three- and four-dimensional data. Ongoing projects include developing techniques to define and describe essential pelagic habitat, developing histories of environmental variables affecting larval pollock recruitment and survival in Shelikof Strait, Alaska, and the use of GIS and visualizations in the hirtory of recent arctic science. My dissertation was on the history and development of the Stommel Diagram - a representation of the spatial and temporal aspects of oceanic phenomena - and how similar techniques might be applied to current uses of GIS in fisheries."
