I was born and raised in a small town in northern Indiana, surrounded by corn, soybeans, trains and factories. And odd mix, but one that many people in the Midwest know well. After high school I moved to Tucson, AZ. I was on cross-country bicycle trip and picked it off the map as a place that looked interesting. I was right, and wound up adopting Tucson as my new home. I lived there most of my adult life, from 1975 to 1983, and from 1988 to 1994. I worked at dozens of odd jobs through those years, but spent most of my time pursuing a career as a musician. From 1983 to 1988 I moved to Nashville, TN, to work on songwriting. At the end of the 1980s I shifted gears, quit playing music in bars, and went to school. I had been involved in various types of political organizing over the years and decided to study politics more closely. I attended Pima Community College, and then the University of Arizona where I got a BA and MA in political science. After that I moved to Long Island, NY to attend graduate school at SUNY, Stony Brook. I completed a PhD in 2001. In 2000 I married Victoria Gatzke, who I'd met back in Tucson, and moved to San Francisco, where she lived.
