Course Description: This course explores the social-structural context, quotidian realities, and contributions of Latin American women in culture, the economy, and politics, with an emphasis on the 20th century. In so doing the course aims to achieve the following goals: (1) convey a more thorough understanding of contemporary Latin American societies, (2) enhance students’ understanding of the ways in which women’s experiences differ across cultures, as well as the ways in which gender structures one’s participation in any given culture, (3) sharpen students’ critical and analytical abilities in oral discussion and writing, and (4) introduce students to the scholarly resources available on this subject matter.

Assignments and Computation of Final Grade: You can earn a total of 100 points in this class, which are distributed as follows among the required assignments:
Organize and lead 2 discussions @ 5 points 10 points
2 analytical essays (1200 words each) @ 15 points 30 points
Research proposal and annotated bibliography 20 points
5 quizzes @ 4 points 20 points
Final exam 20 points
