The Koso (Panamint) live in the China Lake area. In the Coso Mountains of Inyo County are many petroglyphs showing pronghorn and other animals, and anthropomorphic figures that look like personifications of suns or stars. According to Thomas Curwen's article in Discovery Magazine for Summer 97, Monache, Paiute, Panamint and Timbisha Shoshone, the Kawaiisu, Chemeheuvi and Tubatulabal belie that the Cosos are the center of the world, and the hotsprings there the place where life began. The Shoshone thought that the carvings were not made by people, but by the rock baby spirit. A similar spirit is described by the Kawaiisu.
