Living along the ocean shore, the Gabrieleno (or Tongva) made use of the resources of the sea, such as mollusks and fish. They participated in the Chinigchinch cult in which the cult members took tolache, or datura, to see visions, as did the Diegueno and the Yokut. Like the Luiseno, they created sand paintings to instruct the young in their attainment of adulthood.(Heizer: 1980)

They traded with the Serrano, giving them shell beads, dried fish, sea otter pelts and steatite (soapstone) vessels, and getting acorns, deerskins and seed foods. (Davis: 1966)
