AIDS IN THE BARRIO: ESO NO ME PASA A MI (THIS COULD NEVER HAPPEN TO ME)

by Peter Biella and Iván Drufovka, principal makers. 29 minutes. USA. Distributed by Cinema Guild..

The first HIV/AIDS education made for Spanish-speakers in the US, this work is divided into three parts. It describes conditions of racism and economic exploitation that lead Spanish-speakers to the sale and use of injection drugs. Next, it analyzed homophobia in terms of its impact on denial and increased oppression of AIDS sufferers. Finally, it considers how the dynamic of machismo/mariaismo leads to high-risk behavior.
