Kiana Dressendorfer Scholarship
For Archaeology 2008
A $1000 scholarship will be awarded to the winner of an essay competition.
*May be awarded to one applicant or in increments to more than one applicant.
The Kiana Dressendorder Scholarship in Archaeology will be awarded annually to
an SFSU undergraduate or graduate student to pursue their interests and
education in the archaeology of any region of the world.
The scholarship fund was set up in memory of SFSU student Kiana Dressendorfer
by her family. Kiana passed away in December 1997 just after she completed her
BA in History at SFSU. Beloved by students and faculty alike, Kiana's
exuberance and intelligence are being honored by her family in this
Scholarship Endowment so that other students may follow the path that
interested Kiana so deeply -- Archaeology.
Archaeology, for the purpose of this Scholarship, is broadly conceived as the
study of the material culture of peoples worldwide, past and present,
conducted through a variety of textual, theoretical, and methodological
analyses, including excavation, ethnohistorical/documentary research, research
of previously excavated materials housed in museums and special collections,
and so on. Archeology includes aspects of study from Humanities, Social
Sciences, and Sciences. In addition to scholarly research, archaeology may
also include innovative approached for teaching the subject at any level of
education, including but not limited to : developing teaching kits, field
schools for young people, webs sites for curriculum, virtual museums. The goal
of archaeology is to add to our understanding of the worldwide, daily life,
technology. society, politics, economy, and artistry of peoples worldwide -
through research and education.

Eligibility:
You must be a currently enrolled
undergraduate or graduate student at SFSU
with a
minimum GPA of 3.0. Must also
be a continuing student the following fall semester enrolled in at least 6
units.
How
to enter: Write an essay
(three pages) in which you explore an
archaeological project which you would
like to pursue.
Explain how the Kiana
Dressendorfer Scholarship will further
your training or productivity as an
archaeologist.
Your application packet must
contain (4) copies of the following materials:
1. Kiana Dressendorfer Scholarship application
2. Applicant's resume
3. One signed letter recommendation from a professor, addressing applicant's
suitability
4. Transcript from Registrar's Office (All applicants must submit an
undergraduate transcript. Graduate applicants must also submit a graduate
transcript. Transcript copies from your Department file which includes Fall
2007 grades are acceptable)
5. Three page essay as described above
6. Type the following statement on a separate page, type your name beneath,
then sign and date it.
"As a condition of accepting this scholarship, I agree to submit a three page
final report on my scholarship work accomplished to Professor Gary Pahl
(Anthropology Department, San Francisco State University, CA 94132) by June
2009. This report will describe the activities I carried out under the Kiana
Dressendorfer Scholarship."
Scholarship Award will be announced: week of May 5th, 2008 and an award
luncheon will be held with winner invited.
