Department of Anthropology

 Undergraduate Program

These are the requirements for students who have declared anthropology as their major before
 Fall 2007.

There are currently some 300 anthropology majors on campus. Anthropology is both a major in itself and is often combined into a double major with Classics, International Relations, or other disciplines. Our graduates have entered the business, public non-profit, and governmental communities successfully and have been admitted to advanced degree programs in major universities throughout the United States and Canada.

The Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology is designed to serve the needs of students who do not plan to continue their training beyond the baccalaureate level, as well as those who intend to pursue their graduate study leading to the M.A. or Ph.D., either in anthropology or in another academic discipline.

The program is built around seven required core courses to provide a thorough grounding in the basic concepts of the discipline and to enable maximum flexibility in choice of electives. Although concentration in any particular subfield of anthropology is not required for the baccalaureate degree, several sequences of courses are recommended. Students who wish to plan such concentration are urged to consult with an adviser.

The program consists of a total of 36 units. The requirements for the BA in Anthropology are:

ANTH 100 Introduction to Biological Anthropology 3 Units
ANTH 110 Introduction to Archaeology 3 Units
ANTH 120 Introduction to Social & Cultural Anthropology 3 Units
ANTH 300 Foundations of Anthropology--History 3 Units
ANTH 310 Family, Kin and Community 3 Units
