Department of Anthropology

  About Us

The Department of Anthropology is one of the original departments of San Francisco State University. It was founded in 1949 by Adan E. Treganza, a major figure in California archaeology. Treganza's aim was to bring anthropology into the local community and to train teachers and others in the understanding and appreciation of the multicultural California society and the special problems that we face. San Francisco State University is an urban, largely non-residential, campus whose student body reflects the multiethnic, multinational makeup of the Bay Area and east and west sides of the Pacific Rim. The Anthropology Department's mission is to provide the student and university community with the analytical and methodological tools to understand our evolving multicultural society and to be able to work productively in contemporary social and cultural settings. The Anthropology faculty is dedicated to teaching and to active research in a wide range of specialties and to preparing students for careers in both academic and applied fields, such as education, community and international development, medical research and delivery, government, and private enterprise.
