This course investigates the instruments, techniques and methods used to obtain atmospheric and oceanic observations useful for a variety of applications from forecasting to research into basic physical processes. The course begins with fundamentals in measurement, use of electronic instrumentation and logging systems and working with atmospheric monitoring systems, including quality assurance and control of data. We will then have a series of classes focusing on oceanic measurement and monitoring. In the last part of the course, classes will focus on the steps involved in designing and carrying out student field-based observational research project.
