Association of Chinese Political Studies

Association of Chinese Political Studies (ACPS), formerly Chinese Scholars of Political Science and International Studies, is a non-profit academic organization registered in the United States with tax exempt status. ACPS was founded in 1986 by a group of Chinese scholars and students of political science and international relations in the U.S. to promote academic exchange among Chinese scholars and American scholars of China studies. In 1995, the organization changed its name to Association of Chinese Political Studies to allow non-ethnic Chinese to become members so that the organization is for all who study Chinese politics. Currently the organization has about 200 members from various parts of the world. 80 % of them are male and 20% of them are female. ACPS is a related organization of American Political Science Association and International Studies Association. It sponsors two panels in APSA's annual meetings.

ACPS holds an annual conference on China each year. The most recent meeting was convened at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville between April 4-6, 2003. The two-day conference attracted close to 40 participants from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the United States. The theme of the conference was the fourth generation of Chinese leadership and the building of a new political order in China. The conference was co-sponsored by the Provost Office, College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Political Science, Global Studies and Asian Studies, all at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Yang Zhong, then president-elect of the ACPS, presided the opening session. Dr. Loren Crabtree, Provost of the University of Tennessee and a Chinese historian, and Dr. Patricia Freeland, Head of Political Science Department at the University of Tennessee, delivered warm welcoming remarks to the participants at the opening session. The honorable James Sasser, a former U.S. Ambassador to China and a former U.S. Senator from Tennessee, delivered the keynote speech. Ambassador Sasser, speaking from his personal experience, provided insightful views on U.S.-China relations in the new era of global anti-terrorism and the possible new directions that China may take under the new Chinese leadership. He also answered a number of questions fielded from the audience.

ACPS also organizes or co-organizes international symposia and research trips. The most recent symposium that ACPS co-sponsored (with Renmin University and Zhongshan University of China) was held between July 15-16, 2002 in Beijing, China. The theme of the conference was “Political Science and China in Transition”. More than 120 Chinese and overseas scholars participated in the two-day conference. This joint conference, which focused on political changes in China and China’s foreign relations, was the first of its kind held in China. Li Junru, Vice President of CCP’s Central Party School, gave a speech on the transformation of the CCP at the conference. Another recent symposium, "The U.S. Factor in Cross-Taiwan Strait Relations" was held in State Plaza Hotel, Washington, DC, on November 5, 1999, co-sponsored by the Sigur Center for Asian Studies, George Washington University. It was the third episode of ACPS series of symposia on US -China relations. The symposium attracted about 20 senior policy-advisors from the U.S., Mainland China and Taiwan. A deep understanding of common interests was reached and clear differences were also recognized through frank exchange of ideas.

ACPS publishes scholarly works and a refereed academic journal -- Journal of Chinese Political Science.
